Ashley Brooks of Cross Plains, Tenn. has been awarded Farm Credit Mid-America’s Community Excellence Award in recognition of her outstanding leadership in the agricultural community and dedication to paving the way for the next generation of agriculture.

Since its inception in June 2023, Brooks’ agritourism operation, Ruby’s Happy Farm, set itself apart by prioritizing education, sustainability, and community involvement. The farm offers innovative programs focused on sustainable farming practices and small business operations and caters to consumers seeking transparency in their purchases.

“Ruby’s Happy Farm is committed to educating our local community about plant-based products and supporting small-scale farming initiatives through engaging community events,” Brooks explains. “Our unique approach fosters a reciprocal relationship with the local economy, generating employment opportunities and bolstering neighboring businesses. By combining education, sustainability, and economic growth, we aim to create a lasting impact on our visitors and the broader community.”

Brooks founded Ruby’s Happy Farm, LLC after completing the New Farmer’s Academy at Tennessee State University in 2019. The 11-acre farm was originally owned by her grandfather and father, Walter and Wilton Richmond, who transitioned from sharecropping to ownership in 1963.

“Ashley’s innovative approach to create a business on her family’s multi-generational farmland not only showcases leadership but also educates others on the importance of agriculture,” said Marcus Tyler, emerging ag business development manager for Farm Credit Mid-America. “We’re honored to recognize her commitment to both the industry and to her community as our latest Community Excellence Award recipient.”

The Community Excellence Award is made possible through Growing Forward®, Farm Credit Mid-America’s program for young, beginning and small farmers. This multi-year program provides eligible customers with continuing education opportunities that focus on financial management and help them position their operations for growth and long-term success.

Winners of the Community Excellence Award receive $2,500 and the opportunity to be recognized at one of the cooperative’s Know to Grow® conferences. Applications for the next Community Excellence Award opened on July 16; applicants must have attended a Mastering Your Capital workshop, Know to Grow® or Know to Thrive conference.
